Overview
My lesson plan centered around the Iowa Core Standard: SL.1.4 Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly. Students watch the story "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems. Instead of reading the story from a traditional book, Booklfix provides them with a mini-movie experience in class.
Students then get an Ipad and work in small pairs to create their mini-story on google jam board. This activity will require students to pay attention to people, places, and relevant events in the story and make their spin-offs. When students are placed into groups, they are asked, "would you let the Pigeon drive the bus?"
As they recall events in the story, they get creative and use their reasoning skills to tell us why or why not. Then students who feel comfortable sharing their projects will share what they came up with with the class. This is a great activity that technology enables students who struggle in reading to get reading time in an alternative way. Bookflix also includes a Spanish option so Spanish-speaking students who are still learning English can participate.
ISTE Standards
This lesson plan covers a few of the ISTE Standards very well. The first Standard that it teaches is Standard 2.4 Collaborator, which includes collaborating and co-learning with students to discover new digital resources. After watching the story on Bookflix, students go together in pairs to make a new extension of the story.
After the teamwork, peers share their views, explain key details, and recall important parts of the story. Also, watching the story on Bookflix compared to reading a traditional book satisfies Standard 2.5 Designer, where technology is used to create and adapt learning experiences to accommodate learner differences and needs.
Langauge inclusion for primarily Spanish-speaking learners also promotes inclusion brought forward by using the technology compared to if you did not have it. Before taking this course, I did not know how to apply content standards and the use of TPACK to a well-written lesson plan. I have more tools to work towards being an experienced educator with technology and not afraid to use it.
